Dr. Phil Kollmeyer
Dr. Phillip Kollmeyer is an Assistant Professor at McMaster University, specializing in the design and management of battery energy storage systems, with a focus on reducing costs and improving functionality.
His research, conducted in collaboration with graduate students, aims to advance battery energy storage through strategies such as co-optimized battery cell and pack design, machine learning-driven battery management, and aging-sensitive control. These collaborative efforts not only enhance the efficiency and longevity of battery systems but also provide students with hands-on experience using advanced facilities and equipment. By integrating these innovative approaches, Dr. Kollmeyer’s research group strives to develop more effective and reliable energy storage solutions while preparing the next generation of engineers and researchers.
Some of his other notable work include:
- Co-leading the Battery Workforce Challenge three-year competition, in which McMaster students (1 of 2 universities in Canada) compete with schools from North America to design, build, test and integrate an advanced EV battery pack into a Stellantis brand vehicle.
- Authoring over 60 publications, which are widely cited and have significantly influenced both academic research and industry practices, through the creation of open-source battery datasets and algorithms.
- Serving as General Chair of the 2023 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference (ITEC).
- Conversion of a Ford F-150 truck to an EV, to support the Ph.D. research at the University of Wisconsin
